"I was very scared and a bit daunted! But to find one's way anywhere one has to find one's door, just like, Alice; you see. You take too much of one thing and you get too big, then you take too much of another and you get too small. You've got to find your own way into things..."

love it: reuben margolin

Reuben Margolin's kinetic sculptures are pretty amazing. Sculptors like this really blend the line between engineering and art- and nature for that matter.

RIP Sam Maloof

Designer and woodworker Sam Maloof has passed away. I saw a documentary on PBS a few years back on his work that blew my mind. He was the kind of artist who wanted to infuse the artist, the art, and the viewer in one experience. He refused to commercializre his work when offered multi-million dollar design deals because he felt his art and design would be lost without the touch of the woodworkers hands. He wrote books on how to make his furniture so everyone could be an artist and (up until his death), prefered to be refered to as a 'woodworker' because, "I like the word. It's an honest word." Here is a link to a fantastic article in the Los Angeles Times about his work and his life.

Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey

Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey work with grass to reproduce photographs.
Very cool! I'd love to see them in person...err or maybe as a bird.

"We are exploring the capacity of grass to record complex photographic images through the production of chlorophyll. The equivalent of the tonal range in a black-and-white photograph is produced in the yellow and green shades of living grass. Although these organic "photographs" are exhibited in a fresh state for a short time, excessive light or lack of it eventually corrupts the visibility of the image."

Alexandre Arrechea

Saw Alexandre Arrechea's work in ArtNexus the other day and was intrigued with the juxtaposition of hard and soft, bitter and sweet.
There's nothing more poignant than a glass punching bag.

"I always say that I'm an artist who works with pictures and words, so I think that the different aspects of my activity, whether it's writing criticism, or doing visual work that incorporates writing, or teaching, or curating, is all of a single cloth, and I don't make any separation in terms of those practices."

Guillaume Reymond's Human Tetris

This is a little old, but I thought I would share it anyway. Guillaume Reymond used blocks of people to play a live game of tetris with an audience.

Nick Van Woert, Sculptor

I love the stilled velocity in Nick Van Woert's mixed media sculptures.
This first piece is "Untitled (Julius Caesar by Unknown by Nick van Woer). It's almost as though the bust of Caesar got a pie in the face. For more of his works, check out his website.

I am a night painter, so when I come into the studio the next morning the delirium is over. I come into the studio very fearfully, I creep in to see what happened the night before. And the feeling is one of, "My God, did I do that?"

Dirty Mouse Pads

This is such interesting, dirty art. I love it when something we use everyday can be taken aside and looked at in a new way. Check out more at J.K Keller's website.

"The time of getting fame for your name on its own is over. Artwork that is only about wanting to be famous will never make you famous. Any fame is a by-product of making something that means something. You don't go to a restaurant and order a meal because you want to have a shit."

"I don't like a lot of the stuff that goes on in the art world,
but it's hard to be old and like what goes on around you"

found artist: john dorgan

Unfortunately, this is the only painting I found by
John Dorgan and there isn't any real info on him either.
It's titled "Einstein's Rainbow Effect: From Within, From Without".
Magic.

Helen Levitt

Photographer Helen Levitt passed away this past March. I've always adored her photographs and thought I would share some here. She revealed day-to-day life as something special and filled with colorful moments in places you'd least expect to find them.

Marlene Mocquet

I love these whimsical, dreamy paintings by Marlene Mocquet.
