Blind painter John Bramblitt

At first I thought this might be an extremely cheesy "human interest" story, but it surprised me. John Bramblitt lost his sight and now paints from memory. His painting is a visceral experience and an interesting perspective into what painting really is.

The Mona Greasa

Phil Hansen paints the "Mona Greasa" with a bunch of greasy hamburgers. Gross but cool.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

"I have tried to depict the true and not the ideal. It is a defect, perhaps, for warts do not find favor in my eyes, and I like to embellish them with playful fur, to round them, and to put a shining end on them. I do not know if you bridle your pen, but when my pencil moves, it is necesary to let it go, or - crash!...nothing more."

Bacteria Art

Ed Yong explains art you can make in a bacteria dish.

A little light weekend treat for you.

This beach scence was drawn using eight strains of glowing bacteria. Each has been engineered to produce a differently coloured fluorescent protein. The bacteria were swabbed over a nutrient plate and left to grow overnight, resulting in this living, shining work of art.

The best thing about it is that it comes from the laboratory of Roger Tsien, who won a Nobel Prize for his discovery of work on developing the green fluorescent protein, GFP. This big daddy of glowing proteins was isolated from a species of jellyfish and its structure has since been tweaked to produce variants that glow in different colours. By providing scientists with a way of visualising the goings-on inside living cells, GFP and its kin have revolutionised modern molecular biology. And, obviously, it makes for pretty, pretty pictures.

Israeli Pop Band "Eatliz" Video

Hey - Music Video from Eatliz on Vimeo.

The video is pretty awesome. Anything where the main character is a naughty little girl is alright in my book. The music reminds me of something that I just can't put my finger on. Anyway, it made me want a pet frog to ride on for sure.

Mama Shelter in Paris

About the Founders: Created by the TRIGANO family (co-founders of Club Med) and French philosopher, Cyril Aouizerate, MAMA SHELTER was designed by Philippe STARCK to offer an eclectic and electric ambiance thanks to its friendly, warm and casual common areas.

It has won several design awards and I want to stay there to feel cool and hip. No really. All I would have to do is stand next to these pirate hats in the bar and I think I would feel a little bit cooler. It is some unique design work- I'd love to see how functional it would be to stay here!

artspeak: pablo casals

One of the greatest cellists to have lived on this earth, Pablo Casals was not only a great musician, but a lover of life and all that makes it beautiful. He was a magnificent advocate for peace, even writing the UN anthem for world peace. I recommend reading his (out-of-print) "Joys and Sorrows". Even though Casals played for kings and queens, he was a simple man who loved the simple pleasures in life.

“To strip human nature until its divine attributes are made clear, to inform ordinary activities with spiritual fervor, to give wings of eternity to that which is most ephemeral; to make divine things human and human things divine; such is Bach, the G”

Easter Egg Ice

Alder Suttles

Love these photographs by Alder Jane Suttles. For the most obvious of reasons...they are magical, nostalgic, and colorful. Reminds me of The Borrowers... www.alderjane.com

found artist: tim johnson

Tim Johnson is a retired naval officer living in Capetown, South Africa.

"I work mainly in oils and watercolours and tend to focus on three categories of 'portraits'.
Portraits of people, ships and buildings.
Each has their own character, and I try to capture this in my work"

I liked looking at Tim's portraits of naval officers and pictures of boats. He seems to be a really happy artist- Bob Ross would be proud...

“My hope is that when people first see the cover, they won't understand what they are seeing. Then, only as they read the book or the flap copy will that image change from dishes with dust on them to something else.”

found artist: ken aldridge

I don't really think anyone's artist bio should be this long, or ever elaborate on how they were "born" to be an artist. But that is not the reason I'm sharing this "rock art gallery" with you- it's because this picture of David Bowie is so amazing...

christine shields...me like

I'm a sucker for good portraiture.

art speak: andy goldsworthy

"My art is an attempt to reach beyond the surface appearance. I want to see growth in wood, time in stone, nature in a city, and I do not mean its parks but a deeper understanding that a city is nature too-the ground upon which it is built, the stone with which it is made"

- Andy Goldsworthy
